Rare and original, 1890's Cast Iron, HorseDrawn Fire Engine / Fire Patrol Wagon manufactured by the Kenton Hardware Co. This wonderful, Cast Iron Fire Patrol Wagon measures approx. 14” long overall by 6” tall (to the top of the driver’s head) by 3 1/2” wide (across the front hooves of the horses).
The Fire Patrol Wagon is pulled by three, sprinting horses and has a separately cast driver that is of the period but likely not original to the Wagon. The surface paint is 100% original.
Founded in 1890 the Kenton Lock Manufacturing Co. began producing toys in 1894 with a line of horse-drawn fire equipment, banks, and toy stoves. Renamed Kenton Hardware in 1900, the company became part of mammoth the National Novelty Corp. merger in 1903 and continued its toy line under the name Wing Mfg. Co. Involved in several unsuccessful takeovers, Kenton eventually emerged as a separate unit, the Kenton Hardware Co., and again produced toys successfully from 1920-1935.
This wonderful, 1890's Fire Patrol Wagon is in very good condition. There are no cracks, breaks or physical damage to the cast iron. A very long time ago the central bolt that holds the two halves of the wagon section together was replaced and the two halves are slightly askew. There is no other repairs or alterations of any kind. The surface paint is generally well preserved and 100% original. The surface has never been repainted, touched-up, restored or altered in any way. The Wagon and Horses retain approx. 80% of their original surface paint however the surface is soiled and dusty – with a gentle cleaning the Toy will certainly clean up to a higher grade. As stated above, the Patrol Wagon comes with a period, separately cast driver that is appropriate but likely not original to the Toy. The Wagon lacks the three seated rear firemen.
